'ranged tips' tips
The following is a list of advanced tips for ranged combat and objects.
Weapons and ammo:
- Different ranged weapon types (ie. bow/crossbow) have different
properties. Bows have a slightly quicker load speed than crossbows.
Crossbows deal slightly more damage than bows.
- The type of damage dealt (eg. piercing, bashing, fire, lighting) by
a ranged attack is determined by the ammo, not by the weapon.
- Most ammo deals damage type 'pierce', but rare ammo can be found
that deals other types of damage. The skills 'identify' or 'lore'
can be used to discover the damage type of ammo.
- Every ammo carries particular special effects (eg. added damroll,
added shooting range). These special effects only last for one shot.
- Most special effects produced by ammo can be seen in your 'score' when
the ammo is loaded into your weapon.
- Ammo will automatically decay if left on the ground for too long.
Attributes and statistics:
- Load speed is dependent upon dexterity (and weapon type).
- The amount of movement speed drained after arming a weapon is
dependent upon constitution.
- Hitroll provides a slight boost to precision.
NPCs (and walls):
- Shopkeepers, guildmasters, and healers are immune to ranged attacks.
- Walls of ice/roots block targeted ranged shots.
- Untargeted ranged shots can fly over walls and hit players, but
cannot hit npcs.
Clans:
- For the most part, clan guards are immune to ranged attacks.
- Unless clan guards are blinded, they will block shots that are going
into the guild.
- Clan members cannot shoot anyone who is fighting their clan guard.
Miscellaneous:
- It is impossible to shoot into or through underwater rooms.
- Airshield and force field are a good counter to any ranged attack.
- Ranged attacks can be dodged and shield blocked. However, dodging
and blocking ranged attacks is less effcient than melee attacks.
- A shot that misses a target has a chance to randomly hit someone else.
- You are more likely to miss when your target is fighting or sleeping.
- You need a minimum shooting range of 4 to shoot at targets in the
sky (in the flight area; see 'help fly'). You cannot shoot into the
sky if you are underwater, inside, or in a forest.
- Rangers, who can easily navigate the canopy of the forest, are able
to shoot into the sky from inside a forest. But they still cannot
shoot underwater or from indoors.
- If you are in the sky, you cannot shoot into a forest, indoors, or
underwater. Even rangers cannot shoot into the forest from the sky.
